How To Make Your Holiday A Healing Experience, NOT A Stressful One (Even With Children!)

It's the holiday season, and after taking a few days away with my family camping (which was lovely) it suddenly dawned on me that with a 2 year old in tow I wasn't going to be sleeping until 10am or relaxing by the campfire for too long! In fact, it's hardly a relaxing time for the adults when you are constantly running around after the little ones, no matter what type of holiday you choose.

However, there are quite a lot of ways that you can weave relaxation into your family holiday and here are 5 ideas that you can do each day to make sure you get the most out of your time off;

If you usually work in an office, have a stressful job or are constantly switched on to technology in your normal life - make your holiday a no-technology zone. Switch off your cell phone (yes really!) and don't be tempted to check emails or ring the office. Make the most of this 'quiet' time to practice 'doing nothing' something that we should do on a regular basis but we very rarely do. If you can do this for an hour each day for your 1 or 2 week holiday, you will be totally de-stressed. Just enjoy being outside in the open air or sitting by the pool for an hour.

If you are staying in a hotel, check if they offer any treatments such as facials or massages, we rarely get the time to enjoy these when we are at home during our busy lives so make time now - let somebody pamper you for an hour. If you are holiday with your partner and children, swap the child minding duties so that you both get a time out and you can both receive a treatment. Each day when you get out of the shower, take extra time to get ready, moisturise your skin and paint your nails or give yourself a little massage on your face using your fingertips. If you are Reiki attuned - don't forget to self treat everyday, you have no excuses not to do this when you are off work and out of your normal routine. You could do it when sunbathing or last thing at night when you go to bed.

Do what you don't normally do. If you usually exercise on a regular basis or have a physical job, take it easy and relax. Go for long strolls on the beach or in the countryside rather than pounding on a treadmill. If on the other hand you usually sit all day in front of a computer - be active. Try swimming, walking on the beach, tennis or badminton with your family, or even horse riding. Aim to do an activity a day rather than just sitting around all day. If you don't normally look after yourself during your busy working day or if you are a mum to young children see the above tip about pampering yourself! Do it; now is the time to put yourself first for once.

If you never find the time to read usually, why not try a 'holiday novel'. We're not talking War and Peace here, we're talking something fluffy, funny or filled with frolicking! Now is not the time for reading that serious book that you received for your birthday, keep it light and relaxing.

Watch a sunrise or sunset everyday, enjoy your surroundings. This is something that we don't usually get time to appreciate when we are at home in our busy daily lives, but there is nothing more beautiful AND relaxing. So don't just stick to the pool or the hotel, really enjoy your natural surroundings, especially if you are in a completely different landscape to your normal home. Get back to nature and do the things that are free; walking on the beach or mountains, visiting the local markets or beauty spots, talking to the locals, really embrace your surroundings and make the most of your time off.

Enjoy your holiday!
