Staring at your microwave oven and waiting for your food to get warmed or cooked, haven't you ever wondered how it is done? Or have you ever wondered how tiny or microscopic things can be measured in accurate? These are all made possible with waveguides. It is an organized structure used to guide waves. This isn't the literal waves we see at seas or oceans but wave meaning it is a disturbance that moves in a medium with its purpose to transfer energy. A wave needs a pathway to create the desired output just like the cooking mechanism of a microwave oven. It is waveguides that lead the power to the cooking area of a microwave. How does this work? Let us simply discuss these matters to have a clear and simple picture. Waves that are situated or transmitted in an open space may be dispersed in all directions. The power it brings from one point to another may be weakened or lost as it reaches its desired target. Without waveguides, expected output would not be delivered. But with it, it encloses the waves and is propagated in one direction, thus not losing its power at all. Its structure is metal and has a characteristic that is hollow. It is designed for high frequency waves only. There is one guiding principle though on waveguides and that is the width of the waveguide must be proportional with the magnitude or degree of intensity of the wavelength to be guided. To have a clearer picture on this matter, examples are given. For example the radar in boats and control booths at the airport, use waves to read signals. With a waveguide, it directs the wave to an antenna. This will lead to proper transmission of power and signals. Waveguides are also common in medicine. It is a tool for accurate and scientific measurement. Just like when a certain microscopic thing or a specimen needs to be measured, the waveguide is adjoined to the specimen. This is done so that the power of the instrument that tests a specimen just like an Ultrasonograhy device will be conserved and can give accurate results on what the specimen is and how it measures. With these uses mentioned above, waveguides are essential as these would save lives and make it easier for experts like doctors to address medical conditions of patients. Amazing how technology has contributed so much in a more convenient existence of man. Let us use it to our advantage.
