Working As A Telecommuter

By : Stewart Wrighter

When you were young, you would have imagined your job around some huge factories, contract slitting or OEM slitting systems. However, as you grew up, you found that a job of a telecommuter might be suitable for you. Technological devices such as telephones, fax machines and the internet have made it possible. With added features of web conferencing techniques and conference calls, things have become easier. Nevertheless, before you decide this as your final career choice, you must find out what it is like to work as a telecommuter.

There are a lot of benefits that these workers enjoy. The biggest benefit is the flexibility of working hours and working pace. Even though the deadlines need to be met on time, the worker has flexibility regarding time and speed of the work. It is up to you whether you choose to work at daytime or at nighttime. Similarly, a worker is free to choose where he/she will work from. Whether it is your home, your favorite coffee house or the park near your house, it is entirely your choice to choose your own workplace.

Working as a telecommuter also saves a lot of your expenses. Working at home will mean that you are saving your money that would have been spent on an office wardrobe, lunch, snacks, fuel, day care, etc. This kind of work is also quite suitable for housewives. Instead of sitting idle at home, they can work as a telecommuter and earn their own living.

On the other hand, working as a telecommuter also has many disadvantages. First of all, the workers would lack discipline of a proper working environment. Likewise, they will also miss out on the latest office gossip and small company meetings. At times they will also experience isolation because they would be missing out on office socializing.

Employees working from home will not have to face many distractions if they were in an office setting. At a proper office environment, a worker might escape family interruptions and household chores. However, as a telecommuter, things would be difficult. You will find it hard to balance your work life and your personal life. This is because your family and friends might assume that you would always be available for a little gossip or some shopping. In such a case, managing your time and deadlines might not be very simple. Moreover, you might also turn into a workaholic. You might also at times feel that you are always working while other family members get to have fun and enjoy good family bonding.

Evaluating both the advantages and disadvantages, you will get to find two sides of the story. Your decision of becoming a telecommuter will be determined by these two options. If you are a socialite and isolation scares you, this is not going to be a wise career path for you. Similarly, you shouldn't go for it if you like to work under close supervision. However, if you wish to be independent and want to become your own boss, this is the right option for you. Moreover, if you think that you can concentrate on work better at home; this is the best option for you.
