Some people do not want to think of counseling when it comes to saving their marriage. They think that only crazy people go to a "shrink". In reality though, you may need counseling as a last resort to help you. After all, your other relationships revolve around your marriage and this is why it is a good idea to save the marriage. There is one sure way to know if marriage counseling is the right thing for you. If you had problems with infidelity, communication, conflict, work-life balance, children, blended family, family violence, or substance abuse, then counseling may be right for your relationship. A family counselor can help enhance the entire families relationship by helping you explore communication techniques and conflict solutions that can make your family work better. They can also help in working on deep issues that may have carried over from childhood traumas. When choosing a family therapist, you do not have to go with the first one you call. You can interview up to five counselors before making your final decision on which therapist will work the best for you and your partner. During this interview you may want to keep these questions in mind to ask the potential counselors: Have you worked with couples experiencing the same kind of problems that we are having? What are some things I can expect from counseling? What are your forms of treatment methods? What kind of price do you charge? Ask your friends and families for referrals of therapists names who have had counseling themselves. Also non-profit boards set up referral services to where you can get names of licensed professionals. If a satisfactory number of referrals are not reached, then you could always check out counselors sites online. This way you can get a resume, articles, and a description of their practice and get a feel of how the therapist will work. You want to make sure that you choose a licensed therapist. These licensed include, but are not limited to MFT, LCSW, Ph.D., Psy.D., and M.D. MFT is a Marriage and Family Therapist License, LCSW is Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Ph.D and Psy.D are Psychologists with a doctorate degree, and an M.D. Is a Psychiatrist. You should choose a licensed professional based on their education, internship, and practice standards that must be maintained to get the license they have received. Relationship coaches have a similar name, but do not have a similar obligation.
