When determining when it would be best for a patient to see a surgeon concerning back or neck pain, there are a few factors to consider. First, what type of person and problems would be the best candidate for a spinal surgery or other spinal procedure? Second, what types of spinal, back or neck problems would qualify a person as a candidate for surgery or other techniques to relieve pain and what techniques would work best?
While many people experience back and neck problems, not all people who experience these problems need a back surgeon. Those who are most likely candidates for surgery and should seek treatment tend to experience different sensations of which ultimately cause them discomfort.
These sensations and experiences include numbness, pain, and tingling of the fingers and toes, people who have experienced a trauma to the back or neck, those with full or partial paralysis and those with severe back or neck pain. Additionally, people who have suffered from various injuries to the spine such as a herniated disc, Scoliosis, or spinal tumors also experience various degrees of back pain and many require spinal surgery.
Historically, patients with a back problem or other pain related to the spinal cord would simply suffer. However, with recent advancements in technology, some form of relief can be provided with various surgeries and other procedures. Typically, depending on the exact nature of the injury or other spinal problem, fusions, discectomies, joint replacements, and adjustments using either natural spinal manipulation or surgery are some options available to the patient.
Most of the spine surgery options available are minimally invasive, meaning they have a low impact on the patient's overall life. These minimally invasive surgeries include options to decompress the spinal canal, fuse the spinal cord and vertebra, the correction of Scoliosis, and help to stabilize vertebral fractures as well. While these surgical options do require a hospital stay and post operative rehabilitation in some cases, they require a minimal recovery time, minimal use of pain relievers and achieve an overall better outcome after the procedures are performed.
Because vertebral fractures, which is a break in the vertebra, or back bones were mostly inoperable, this type of spine injury was one that was treated simply with ice or heat compresses. The patient would be on bed rest until the fractures healed, suffering from pain. Additionally, patients that have been treated by an oncologist or pulmonary specialist or have been diagnosed with osteoporosis and suffer excruciating back pain may have this condition as well.
However, with the advancement in medical technology in the recent past, this is now an easily treatable condition. Using a minimally invasive surgical technique, called Kyphoplasty, this treatment injects a bone filler into the fractured vertebra to help strengthen and align it properly. It takes only a half hour and, usually, the patient can go home to recover the same day of the procedure. Most patients can experience a relief from back and neck pain the very same day.
