Whose Hotel Reviews Can You Trust the Most?

One of the most important aspects of planning your next stay in a hotel is to research, research, research. Of course we all want the best value for our dollar, but you really don't want to end up at a dingy, uncomfortable hotel because you didn't fully research where you would be staying. This means getting online and reading as many reviews from different hotel review websites as possible. And don't just read a few. The only way to get an accurate understanding of what the hotel offers is to browse multiple sites, as chances are you will encounter a combination of reviews from ordinary travelers, expert travel writers, and even hotel owners trying to make-up for negative reviews.

Even if you have thoroughly looked into all the online reviews of hotels , it is still imperative that you are able to distinguish which of those reviews are actually truthful. These days everyone and everything is online—gone are the days when we relied on trustee travel handbooks, so now more than ever is it important to use your good judgment and know who to trust. There are definitely benefits to using well-established online hotel rating sites as they will typically offer a satisfaction guarantee. Even though these companies make their profits off of hotel bookings, it's in their best interest to provide accurate descriptions and reviews so that you reuse their service for your next trip.

The next way of assessing the true quality of a hotel is to evaluate the reviews of customers who have previously stayed there. These can be incredibly helpful, but it's also important to know that one bad review doesn't necessarily provide a good picture. One person leaving a poor rating should never discount a list of good reviews. You should always consider the overall picture created by all the reviews. These types of reviews are made by previous guests for the benefit of future visitors, so whether they warn you to go somewhere else or they recommend the hotel as an enjoyable stay, listen to the overall theme presented by the reviews.

Another easy giveaway of an inaccurate review is when it gushes with adjectives. Beware of raving reviews with the claims: 5 stars, greatest hotel, paradise, or most romantic as these may have been created by hotel owners or employees attempting to counteract negative posts. They may also be accompanied by room descriptions that seem to have been copied right off the hotel's website. Such descriptions should be a quick indicator of a fraudulent review — who has time for that anyway? Reviews including room descriptions will typically only be mentioned in a negative light, and positive reviews will most likely include a recap of fun activities, attentive customer service, cleanliness, and may also mention the type of trip (business, vacation, etc.) and who they traveled with (husband/wife, children, etc.). Basically, hotel room accommodations should exceed all of your needs—you will only notice what's missing if you're uncomfortable, and that's what leads to negative reviews.

So with all of this in mind, know that you are probably better off trusting reviews of hotels compiled by ordinary travelers. With good judgment and a good mixture of different hotel review sites, you will have accurate recommendations for booking your next hotel stat.
