Saving Money: "Deal of the Day" Sites and Other Tricks

Every so often, someone reputable will say that the economy is making its way back to stability. However, for every one of those people, there are five others saying that the economy is still pretty much in a state of disarray.

Whether the economy is in ruins or not, it's a good idea to try to save money where you can. One of the easiest ways to do this is by using "deal of the day" web sites. There are dozens of sites that offer a new deal every day, often offering savings of more than 50%. Some sites focus on electronics (great way to get a new mp3 player, or maybe an external hard drive), others on fashion and beauty (a lot of these sell overstocked designer clothes and accessories at regular prices) and still others on restaurant and service deals (these are often divided up by city, and sometimes even by borough or neighborhood -- keep your eyes peeled and you might end up with a deal at your favorite little bistro!).

There are tons of other ways to save money. Here are a few of them:

-Take advantage of coupons! You might think it's too much time for too little payoff, but if you're savvy enough, you could take a big chunk out of the amount you spend on groceries. A guy recently spent over three months eating on an average of $1 per day, each day posting a new blog entry about how he pulled it off. He kept careful track of his spending and savings, and worked out that he actually ended up spending only $75, and worked out the retail of everything -- pre-coupon -- to be about $1,500. Though it's frankly insane to think that anyone could spend $1,500 on groceries in three months, the fact that he only spent roughly 5% of what he would have is pretty mind-blowing.

-Don't just throw away stuff you're not using. Try to sell it! You could hold a garage sale, bring it to a consignment shop that pays for "donations, or open up a little online shop using a blog hosting site. You could even have your own deal of the day. (This technically qualifies as a way to make money, but potay-to, potah-to.)

-Buy things used/refurbished. So long as it's "factory-refurbished," a used camera or computer will work just as well as a brand-new one. It might have cosmetic damages, but hey -- in this economy, does it matter? On the same note, don't discount used clothes on account of small holes or tears. Even if you're no whiz with a sewing needle, chances are you know someone who is and would be happy to help.

Bear in mind, it can be hard not to get too caught up in savings. Just because a powder blue leisure suit has been marked down 80% from its sale price doesn't mean you should buy it -- unless it's for Halloween, and even that's pushing it.
