A modern trend is to turn an outdoor space into a room that is similar to what you might find inside of your home. Patio and outdoor furniture has become cushioned and more comfortable, outdoor heating is everywhere, and dining is classier and more accessible outdoors now, more than ever. While this is great for families who want to expand their space, but lack the budget for a home addition or a new home altogether, you may find yourself battling bugs while trying to enjoy your outdoor space. There are quite a few ways to keep bugs to a minimum while spending time outdoors, and some of these methods are barely noticeable.
First, try a traditional and pleasantly-scented method. Burning citronella candles and oil is often enough to keep the area free and clear. Surround the perimeter of the space with candles and oil lamps and periodically check them to be sure the flame is still burning. If you choose citronella torches with open flames, be sure to place them far from furniture and structures that could catch on fire.
If citronella is not enough, you may be able to treat the area with bug sprays before opening them for the season. There are products that attach to the garden hose that allow you to spray down bushes and trees, keeping pests like mosquitoes away. The sprays kill the mosquito eggs before they hatch and will need to be applied more than once throughout the season. These sprays are generally safe for trees and bushes, but should not be applied to gardens with edible plants. If you are uncomfortable applying the chemicals to your outdoor living space, consider a solution with natural ingredients.
Some environments are so infested with mosquitoes and other pests that there is no way to completely eliminate them when you are outside. If this is the case, consider putting netting around your outdoor living area. This is also a great idea if you do not want to apply chemicals to kill off the pests. Netting can define an outdoor space and keep animals from the area and falling leaves from falling into the space.
Finally, take preventative measures to not attract bugs in the first place. Standing water calls out to mosquitoes and other bugs, so if you leave buckets, swimming pools, and containers filled with water in the area, bugs are going to migrate from all over your neighborhood. Empty out containers on the regular basis and after a storm, dump standing water into the grass so it will sink into the ground and dry up. If your children have a wading pool in the yard, drain it after they have finished playing. In larger pools that cannot be drained, treat the water and keep the pool covered during long periods of non-use. If you do not invite bugs into the yard, you will stand a better chance at battling the few wayward characters that make their unwelcome presence known. With a little effort, you can create a bug-free outdoor living space for your family to enjoy.
