What Would You Do If You Were Arrested Abroad?

Every day, in every part of the world, people get arrested. It could be because they deliberately did something wrong. Maybe it's a case of mistaken identity. Or they might have just been playing a prank and it went wrong.

If you're arrested while you're traveling outside of the United States you will be treated like all the other crime suspects that are brought in for interrogation by the police. The way you deal with it will have a big effect on what will happen later. It is imperative that you deal with your arrest in an appropriate manner because if you make any mistakes you won't be able to easily correct them later.

Being arrested is a traumatic experience. It is even worse if it happens to you in a country where you can't read or speak the language and you don't know anything about the legal process.

Although it can be very easy to panic in such a situation you must control your emotions. Staying calm and thinking quickly and logically in a situation like this is more important than it's ever been. If you permit the circumstances to unnerve you then you may make some critical mistakes while you are being interrogated. And these mistakes can seriously hurt your chance of winning the case.

Do Not Say Anything and Do Not Admit Anything

Even if you think you should defend yourself it is very important that you do not admit to anything or even say anything. Because you may be agitated it would be easy to try to explain your situation in an attempt to defend yourself. However you could end up saying things and doing things that are not consistent. Keep your mouth shut.

Do Not Sign Anything

The police might try to intimidate you into signing a blank piece of paper. Or they might try to get you to sign a statement that is written in a foreign language. You must calmly yet firmly refuse to sign any document or form. You have to stand your ground.

If it is possible not to talk at all or sign anything you should take that route. You should wait until you have legitimate legal counsel that will advise you properly before you say or sign anything about your case.

Contact Your Consulate

The best thing to do would be to ask to be able to contact your country's consulate in order to talk to your country's consular officer or his or her representative.

You should get in touch with them as soon as you can because they will be able to advise you as to how significant your arrest is and then they can tell you the legal procedure that you should follow.

Your consulate can also provide a lawyer who will tell you what is happening, tell you what your best options are, and advise you about what to do. Your consulate can also get in touch with your loved ones and make arrangements for them to visit you.

Have You Been Physically or Psychologically Abused?

If you have been either physically or psychologically abused you should tell both your consulate representative and your attorney about the abuse. Give them as much detail as you can. Also, if possible, you should alert international human rights organizations about the abuse.

Call Home

Make as many efforts as are necessary to call the members of your family. When you speak to them do not down play what is happening. The better they understand what has happened and the more they know the more help they can get from your representatives in congress as well as the media.

The actions they take at home can compel the government that's in power where you were arrested to hasten actions that will be able to help you to be released as quickly as possible.

Next, if you don't want to even consider the possibility of being arrested in a foreign country and would prefer to enjoy your vacations much closer to home you may want to just hang around in your backyard or patio.
