Keep Your Vera Wang China Beautiful: How to Wash Fine China Safely

What do Haviland china, Vera Wang china, and Kate Spade china have in common besides their stunning good looks? The answer: they're extremely delicate. Fine china is known for being extremely fine in terms of aesthetics, as well as in terms of their physical makeup. That's why we keep them stored away in china cabinets, and only bring them out for the most special occasions. One of the most important parts of fine china ownership is proper knowledge on how to clean the pieces thoroughly and safely. If you have recently purchased Kate Spade china, Vera Wang china, or really, any china, here are a few tips to help you wash your pieces safely and effectively.

1) One of the most important things to know about washing fine china, is that you must wash promptly after use. Letting food dry on the china can lead to discoloration. When you're scraping food off of plates, you should use a rubber spatula so you don't scratch it's surface. Silverware is just too harsh for its delicate surface.

2) Tea and coffee has been known to stain fine china, so you to take extra care when cleaning tea cups. Wash the cups soon after use in a solution made of one part hydrogen peroxide, three parts water, and a drop of household ammonia (clear). Rinse the dishes with warm, clear water and hand dry carefully.

3) When you're ready to wash the dishes, line your sink's bottom and sides with a rubber mat. This will prevent the china from bumping the sink and cracking. If you are wearing jewelry, remove it so you don't run the risk of scratching the china.

4) As far as soaps go, a mild detergent like Ivory or Dove should suffice. When filling the sink with detergent and warm (not hot) water, add 2 tbsp. of vinegar. If you don't want to use vinegar, hydrogen peroxide also works well.

5) You should wash one item at a time with a soft, non-abrasive sponge or soft dish cloth. Don't use excess pressure when cleaning the delicate plates. If there are persistent stains, you should sprinkle on a little baking soda with a few drops of detergent.

6) Rinse each dish with the same temperature of water (warm). An extreme change in water temperature so suddenly can cause the china to crack or split. Don't stack dishes on top of one another while they're drying. If you have a dish rack, be sure to place them in the rack with enough space in between them. The safest way to dry them, if you can't do each piece individually by hand, is to lay them out on a soft towel to air dry. Hand drying them really is the best way, because you don't have to worry about those pesky and unsightly water spots.

7) Once your china is dry, carefully place them back in the china cabinet for their next use.

Best us luck washing your Kate Spade china or Vera Wang china. May they last for many years to come!
