Boots are some of the most versatile footwear known to humankind. From army boots to hiking boots to stiletto- heeled fashion boots, no matter what your footwear needs are, there is a boot made to keep you walkin'. Generally defined as a piece of footwear that covers the foot, ankle and part of the calf or thigh, boots have been around since ancient times. Prehistoric man used boots for protection from snow and cold. While these early inventions were certainly functional, they were a long way from the stylish footwear that boots are today.

Work boots are usually thought of as footwear that is necessary to perform a certain job, such as construction or factory work. These boots are made to protect the feet, toes and ankles of the person employed in a potenetially dangerous occupation. The outside of the work boot is generally made from a tough rawhide leather or rubber material. The part of the boot covering the toe may reinforced with a steel plate to provide additional protection. These type of boot may cover to just above the ankle or they may go all the way to the knee or beyond, depending on the boots intended purpose.

Rain boots or galoshes are speciality boots made from rubber. These boots are made to protect the feet of the wearer in the rain and in situations where exposure to water is expected. These boots typically go to about mid-calf and usually do not have a heel. Rain boots do not have laces or zippers for closure. they are typically closed with a clasp near the top of the boot.

Fashion boots are footwear that are worn for style purposes. Their main function on the foot is to make it look good and perhaps provide the finishing touch to an outfit. These type of boots come in a vast variety of styles, ranging in length from ankle boots to thigh-hi's. The heels of these boots range from a flat sole to a sky high heel. They usually have a zippered closure, but can have laces or even snaps depending on the designer's style.

Recreational boots for specialized sports or other activites such as hiking or skiing, are also very popular in today's society. These boots are highly specialized for the type of activity that the wearer will be performing while wearing them and can be as customized as the wearer.

Whether you are looking for a pair of boots to provide protection for your feet or shelter from cold or wet weather or just a pair to make you and feel great, a good comfortable fit is important. A new pair of boots should be sized to insure proper fit.
