If everything goes right, a diamond wedding ring will be the most important piece of jewelry you'll ever purchase in your entire life. A diamond engagement is not only an emotional investment, but it's also a financial investment, one you should treat very carefully and thoughtfully. Unless you're an experienced jeweler, chances are, you're not really sure where to start, and that's okay. Follow these ten rules and you'll be sure to find that perfect diamond wedding ring for your sweetheart. 1. Determine your budget: Some salespeople will make a man think that the amount of his love is tired to how much he is willing to spend on a ring. Think about how much you're willing to spend before you set foot into a store. Purchasing discount diamond engagement rings from an online retailer might also be a way to go, in terms of price and convenience. The general rule (created by the diamond industry) is two months salary to be spent on a ring--this is a good price range to start. 2. Pay attention: You have many decisions to make, platinum, gold, white gold? Modern or traditional? Which cut? Flashy or understated? Do your homework (online research) before you go out there blindly. Your homework isn't just online research--it's also taking a look at your sweetheart's current jewelry. Does she wear mostly silver or gold? Is it bold and flashy or classic and elegant? 3. Choose a stone: If you're not looking to buy a present ring, you might consider buying the stone itself separately and having it set yourself. The most classic shape is a round solitaire. It really helps if you know what shape your sweetheart wants--princess, pear, round, marquis, etc. 4. Choose the setting: You could go simple with a solitaire setting or add extra stones and other details for a unique setting, see what your sweetheart typically wears in terms of jewelry. If you both have similar tastes, you could even come up with something on your own that you think she would like. 5. Maximize your budget: This is the single most important jewelry purchase of your life. If your aim is a big engagement ring, shoot for the stars. Ask for a stone with more surface area, it won't be as shiny, but it will look much bigger. 6. Bring a buddy: Bring your sweetheart's best friend, mom or even your own mom. It can be unnerving stepping into a jewelry store by yourself. If you're considering purchasing online, have your buddy with you too. Two eyes are better than one. 7. Consider bringing your sweetheart: You might lose the element of surprise, but if you bring your sweetheart, you'll be sure to find something she'll love, obviously. More and more couples have started doing it this way. 8. Plan ahead: Know what you're looking for and how much you can spend so you can start saving up for it.
