Enrolling a child in a martial arts program can provide numerous physical, emotional and mental development advantages that continue throughout adulthood. Trained instructors offer programs in disciplines that are designed to enhance self esteem, respect for others, and confidence in every situation.

The most obvious benefit of martial arts training is the ability to improve a child's self defense skills. Especially with children small for their age, martial arts training can provide a mechanism for improving self confidence and coping with recurring bullying.

The physical condition of the participant will also progress through training. General conditioning differs with each discipline, but cardiovascular fitness and muscle tone will improve as the workouts evolve. Martial arts training includes extensive calisthenics and strength control exercises that enhance balance and coordination.

The emotional development achieved through training is helpful to all children, but can be especially beneficial to those with anger or mood issues. Many martial arts instructors include mental and spiritual elements in their teaching to help identify the roots of anger and fear. Mastering these emotions will improve the quality of the decision making process.

Choosing the appropriate martial arts discipline involves identifying the overall objective for the child. The numerous styles and teaching methods offer a wide variety of developmental options. There are some important questions to consider before deciding on one particular discipline. For instance, is the training primarily for conditioning or self defense? Is the child interested in entering competition? How important is the mental and emotional development component?

Programs in all disciplines can be categorized as formal or informal. Informal training can include YMCA or school sponsored programs such as cardio kickboxing. These classes will teach the child some basic moves and are primarily designed for fun and physical fitness. Formal programs include extensive training in etiquette such as dress, ceremony, methods of interacting with others and lessons that concentrate on personal development. Kendo, Aikido, Tae Kwon Do and Karate are all formal disciplines that emphasize mental, physical and emotional growth.

Practical issues such as body size, build and stature should also be considered when choosing a martial arts club. For example, shorter people may prefer a discipline such as Ketsugo Jujutsu where the kicks are low to the ground and do not require extreme coordination. Conversely, Tae Kwon Do uses large, exaggerated kicks that may be difficult for younger and smaller participants.

Finally, perhaps the most important element in selecting a school is the instructor. It is important to evaluate the philosophy of the teacher and the objectives they have for their students. Some instructors include emotional and mental development in the curriculum while others prefer to concentrate solely on the physical aspects of training

Martial arts programs offer an excellent vehicle to make lasting friendships. Learning a discipline in a group environment will promote bonding with others that have a similar interest. As the group improves their skills, the sense of accomplishment of each individual is shared by everyone.
