Fur coats are synonymous with luxury and decadence, and can be a fantastic investment for someone looking for a coat that will last for years to come. If you have furs or are thinking about purchasing some, you should read up on how to properly store them when they're not in use. By arming yourself with knowledge on proper fur care, you can keep them looking as glamorous as they did when you first brought them home. Storing your fur coats properly can prevent unnecessary wear and extend the life of the coats by years. The key to a long and healthy life for your furs, is choosing the right storage locations and executing regular upkeep on them. Here's how to give them the royal treatment all year round. Fall/Winter: When you're at home, or not wearing your fur coat, you should hang it in a closet with a lot of excess space. You want to make sure it's not crushed or cramped, because it can mat the fur and give it a limp and dull appearance. Use large wood or silk hangers to properly support the heavy coat. Another thing to know, is that you should never hang a fur coat in sunlight, as oxidation may occur. This can cause your fur to lose color and shine. You should also stay far away from plastic garment bags. They have been known to compress the fur and cause it to become matted. Spring/Summer: Summer weather leaves fur coats especially vulnerable. If you live in a place with more humid summers, you should look into climate controlled storage for your furs. It's not really the cheapest option, but it truly is the safest place for your delicate fur coats and can keep them safe and protected from the elements. Many fur owners have reported that their air conditioner dries out the leather in their fur coats, which then caused excess shedding of the fur. More Tips: -Avoid storing your fur coats in cedar closets, and never use moth balls to protect your furs. The pungent smell of both the cedar and the moth balls is incredibly difficult, if not impossible to get out of delicate furs. -Never use a comb or brush on your fur coat. The best way to spruce up your fur coat is to smooth it out with your hand. If it gets wet for any reason, refrain from using a blow dryer to get it back to normal. -It's always a good idea to get your fur coat professionally cleaned before it goes into storage, so any potential problems will be nipped in the bud, and it'll look it's best when it's fur season again.
