Being overweight can lead to a wide variety of health complications. When it comes to things like diabetes, stroke, liver disease, and heart disease the effects of obesity can be downright devastating. That is why so many people are obsessed with losing weight. Look at any strip mall and you will see tons of stores dedicated to helping people lose weight and live healthier lives. However instead of taking part in fad diets that don't work and attempting to cheat with pills and supplements, the best way to lose weight and stay healthy is to make routine exercise a new lifestyle habit.

Before you begin a new program consult your doctor, and make sure you have a few other things in order. First of all, it is important that you get the right amount of sleep every night. Did you know that people who don't sleep enough are actually more likely to be overweight? Sleep is so important for everyone. It helps us recover from stress and restore a sense of calm and well-being. Not getting enough sleep can lead to elevated stress, and stress can be a trigger for overeating and binge eating.

If you're eating sensible and getting 8 hours of sleep every night, you're on the path to start exercising regularly. Any type of exercise can help you improve lung and cardio vascular functional as well as reduce fat and develop muscle tissue. Find an exercise that you enjoy and stick with it.

Looking for something different than your step aerobics or spin class? Try out a martial arts training course. In these classes you will learn close combat training techniques that not only help you burn calories and improve muscle tone, they also give you self-defense instruction. When you work your way through the belt system of a martial art like karate, you will find that you have incentive to keep working harder and better. Joining class with a friend can be an added bonus to help you stay involved in exercise and committed to good health.

When it comes to burning serious calories, swimming is an excellent exercise choice. However, don't be lured into a sense of false security by spending your day at the beach and calling it a productive, calorie-burning day. Swim laps at the community pool or go to an indoor facility like the YMCA. Many indoor pool facilities also offer classes in lifeguarding and water aerobics. Water aerobics can really get the blood moving.

Go for a jog. Jogging is good for you at any distance. If running is something you have always wanted to do, but you don't know how. Consider finding a training course like Couch to 5k. It will help you slowly work up to running 5k even if you have never run before. Just remember that jogging can put stress on your joints, so invest in a good pair of running shoes and check with your doctor if you have any concerns.
