MLB Non-Waiver Trade Deadline Passes

It's now August and Major League Baseball's "Non-Waiver Trade Deadline" has passed. This just indicates the Major League general managers do not need to jump through additional hoops to create a trade. They can still make trades later in August but current Major Leaguers need to pass via the "waiver wire." The waiver wire procedure enables any group lower in the standings to claim a player prior to when he could be traded to some group of greater standing. Numerous teams place their entire rosters on waiver early in August just in case they want to create a trade later. If one more group puts up a claim now, the very first group can withdraw that player but can't make a trade with him later. Often, a group lower within the standings will place a claim just to keep the greater group from obtaining a player. Of course, occasionally the very first group will go ahead and release the player to the group making the claim, so there is really a big amount of gamesmanship needed by all involved.

But the Non-Waiver Trade deadline generally indicates much more than a few players are going to be sleeping in strange beds on strange mattresses for a couple of months, even when they're at "home." Maybe with their former group, they were inside a furnished rental apartment or even an apartment with their normal bed and mattress, regardless of what size it might be. But after the trade, they need to discover a brand new location to live for a few months and get accustomed to some new mattress. If they're lucky, they may discover a nice corporate rental having a king mattress and a great view. If they're not very lucky, they may discover a furnished studio/corporate rental having a full mattress on a Murphy bed. If they're real unlucky, they may be forced into finding a room at an Extended Stay or Executives Suites Hotel for a few months. This most likely happens much more frequently for the minor league players who get traded mid-season than it does for major leaguers.

Whatever their situations, the players who are traded during the middle of the season are living away from home even when they're "home." They most likely don't have access to some queen size memory foam mattress or a memory foam mattress of any kind. They surely have a location to sleep, but it may not be a peaceful restful sleep each night. The incredible thing about athletes at all levels is their ability to focus and play their sports, regardless of what the adverse conditions may be.
