Don't Start Looking For a Business Before You Find Your Business Idea

This article examines reasons why it might be considered not a particularly good idea to simply start browsing the Internet for business ideas if you want to start working for yourself. It is a good way to get rid of some of your hard earned cash and is most likely to result in confusion over what you would like to do. A better approach to working for yourself is to know what you would like to do before you start looking!

Burning desires to pursue a particular business idea are rare, so most of us need to be inspired somehow. First take a detailed look at your present position and ask yourself some questions. The first of these should be along the lines of:

1. Do I like my current line of work, but want to work for myself?

2. Do I hate my current career, and want something completely different?

If the answer to the first question is yes, then you might have an easier task ahead of you. Having studied hard and built up experience in your present career it would be senseless giving it all up simply because you do not like working for others. Better to continue your speciality in your own business. This would form a sound base for a strong business and might even provide a ready list of contacts for customers to get you started.

If you are seeking a direction change, focusing your thoughts first is a good idea instead of browsing through all the different business opportunities that are presented via the Internet. You should ask yourself a number of questions, including:

1. What do I like doing?

2. How would I like to be working?

3. What do I want to achieve from my business?

4. Is this long term development with investment or a short term income that is needed?

The answers to these questions will allow you to concentrate your thoughts and you can then begin to build your new business concept. Working at home may be attractive, a large income important and working without the distraction of regular staff essential. You might be swayed in the area of working from a computer and using freelance suppliers accessed through the Internet as your work force. The thought of dealing in actual goods might be more attractive than agency or commission work.

If you start with a framework for your business venture you will be better placed to start researching for the details to go with it. It could boil down to what item you might want to be selling, meaning that your research can be targetted. It might boil down to what service you want to provide, and researching different consultancies might just spark off the idea that you are looking for.
