Loft Living Offers A Modern Lifestyle For Downtown Residents

By : Stephen Daniels

It used to be that, when it came to big city life, a loft was strictly the domain of the struggling artist crowd. Back then, these large and airy converted-warehouse spaces were the most economical way for a painter or sculptor (or anyone else) to have enough room to combine both their work and living spaces - and creature comforts and aesthetics were not the main concern, to say the least. Nowadays, however, many downtown lofts or similar-style housing areas that exist in large cities are created from the ground up, with all the luxuries and conveniences that you would expect from modern housing - and are becoming a popular choice for all kinds of city dwellers.

For those who love city life, perhaps the most appealing thing about living in a loft is that there is no better way to be right in the thick of things. These buildings are generally located right where the action is, meaning that you will have quick and easy access to all the best dining, shopping, entertainment and transportation that your city has to offer. Along with all of those great perks, of course, come some potential drawbacks, such as ambient city noise, parking problems and perhaps a few more people in your vicinity than you might like. However, for true city dwellers, these things are all just part of the fun.

There is also nothing like the particular aesthetic appeal of a downtown loft. The big, airy, open spaces that were so appealing to working artists when this style of living began are still a part of the draw. There is so much that can be done with all the space that some people can sometimes make them look much bigger than they are. In most cases, some elements of the industrial feel of these spaces are retained, so you'll see exposed pipes, exposed brick, cement floors, large windows and all the other features that make these spots unique.

This kind of living space is a growing phenomenon in many of the larger cities. Those who keep an eye on Toronto real estate, for instance, say that lofts in this great city provide some of the most attractive (and increasingly popular) choices among the upwardly mobile crowd. These Toronto units, like those you will find in large U.S. cities, are either created from converted warehouses or built from the ground up.

So, if you have lofty aspirations for an active city life, a loft may be the right choice for you.
