As you get older it becomes harder to stay fit, but there is no magic barrier stopping you staying healthy. You might just have to work harder at it. For those that do not bother, the penalty is increasing weight and difficulty in running. When you are young you very often ignore your health and still remain trim and energetic. All constitutions vary and some fortunate ones will remain thin and seemingly healthy throughout their life however much they eat and smoke. However, this does not work for everybody, and for most of us the effort to stay fit gets more and more each year that goes by. If you work in an open plan office, why not try casting your eye around your fellow colleagues to compare their levels of health. What you will notice is a gathering of many different types. The obviously health concious ones will be eating salads for lunch and going to the gym after work. There will be some who are pretty fit simply because they lead reasonbably active lives and do not overindulge in any way at all - they take the stairs and always go for a walk at lunch time. There will be others with wide waists that always take the lift rather than the stairs and you know they are very unfit. It is likely that many of them will be still young, perhaps thirty or so, and yet look far older. As you head for fifty, the danger of having let yourself go will start to manifest itself in your daily life. The chance of heart attacks at this age for a non-exercising smoker is many times more than a fit person. But putting the danger of losing your life aside, just looking and feeling unhealthy will also mean that you will not have the quality of life of a fit person. If you are unable to keep up with others on short walks this will mean that you will be shunned by colleagues. Overindulgence in drinking and eating will not win you friends in the long run - and will lead to poor health and potentially a shorter life. It is important to invest in your health at all times during your life, but it is never too late to start caring for your body if you have neglected it so far.
