Go Green with Designer Fashion Accessories

Going Green has become the latest trend, in both the way we live our lives, the way we eat, and now even with our designer fashion accessories. Here are some tips to help you be the greenest designer fashionista around:

1. Pick a good vintage

Reuse. Sometimes you can get your hands on designer fashion accessories that are vintage. Giving an existing item a second lease on life means no new manufacturing resources have to be done. Most often, these vintage items are not that vintage as they may seem, they're often still in-style designers. In addition, we're spared from any additional pollution and carbon emissions.

2. Make it a fair trade

Help producers get a fair price for their labors and promote self-reliance to empower them to break the cycle of poverty so many of then are caught in. The goal of being green is to improve the livelihood of everyone everywhere.

3. Repurpose with a purpose

The process of mining precious materials, gems, and stone is environmentally exhausting. Either avoid purchasing fashion accessories that do not have these items or purchase from jewelry designers who have taken on a more eco-friendly track. Recycled metals have been popping up everywhere recently. A form of silver has been extracted from used photographic film.

4. Go for sustainability

Fabrics like organic cotton, hemp, bamboo and even soysilk are produced or recycled materials that are sustainable, durable and good for the environment.

5. Borrow from friends and family

Just as you used to play with your friends dress-up collection as a child, borrow from friends or family members who have fashion accessories that you like. Allow them to borrow from your closet as well.

6. Take care of your wares

Instead of replacing an entire handbag because something is torn or ripped, repair it for yourself. Giving your accessories some TLC will go a long way to help extend their longevity. Which will in turn be kinder for the environment than running through multiple semi-disposed replacements. Avoid gathering "defective" accessories in your closet, repair them and wear them.

7. Be a fashion leader

Don't just go with the flow, start your own trends depending on what you like. If you happen to like the current trend, then so be it. But if not, pilot your own fashion course down to the smallest detail. If you create your own look with your own style and tastes, you'll buy the things that you truly like, making them classics, for you, and maybe for others who choose to follow. Hey, it's not your fault you have such good tastes.

Following these environmentally friendly tips and you'll be on the fast track to helping the earth survive and thrive. Enjoy life to the fullest, but help out when and where you can.
