Conceived and built earlier in March 2003, the honors for World Car had been presented officially in January 2004 with the 2005 car model year as its first recipients. The program was conducted, initiated and organized by automobile journalists from all around the world.Handled by a non-profit organization, the merit is under the counsel of the Steering Committee of well known automotive journalists from North America, Europe and Asia. Its primary Steering Committee was founded in Detroit, US. Yet, it is in Toronto, Canada that the World Car Awards main office is based in.

For the World Car 2011, these are the top contenders, the Aston Martin Rapide, the Lexus LFA and also the Gullwing SLS supercar by Mercedez-Benz.The final list runs in alphabetical order, from the Honda CR-Z hybrid to the Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV. Furthermore, contained in the list are the Micra and the new electric car, Leaf who are both made by the Japanese car maker Nissan. On top of that, ensuring an appeal with the gen-Y would be the Mini Countryman.

Aside from the Dacia Duster representing the Renault Collection, majority of the contenders are offered, or will likely be distributed in Australia. Nissan Australian however, through its luxury department, will be going closer to a local return as well as the Vauxhall Meriva people mover. You'll find three sub-categories in the Word Car of the Year contest, having 13 vehicles listed within Green Car category, an additional 13 automobiles short-listed for Performance Car honors and also a listing of 50 other units for Design of the Year.

Heading the performance pack will be the McLaren MP4-12C despite the fact that the unit hasn't been screened yet by anybody. Additionally, the Ferrari 458 Italia is a top rated competitor in this category as well.

In the green classification, the competing cars are led by the Chevrolet Volt plug in smart electric car which is found up there in the list, neck-to-neck versus the Mercedes-Benz B-Class fuel-cell design. One of the most open field in the World COTY is the World Car Design Competition. It includes almost everything from the Citroen model DS3 , Dodge Charger to the Volvo s60 and also the Hyundai i45.The final lists in the World COTY in each of the different categories will likely be set on the early part of 2012 before a worldwide panel of judges who are serious automotive journalists. The judges will choose the winners before the announcement at the New York Motor Show.
