Why a Big Appetite should be Encouraged.

We are bombarded with images of size zero models and many of us live in the shadow of disappointment that we can't also be as petite. If we go to a restaurant we fight with our conscience if we are seduced into eating that fantastic desert and as a result we don't really enjoy it. Well I say give yourself permission to develop a big life enhancing appetite - it just means that you are fully engaged with life and that is a good thing. I recently read 'Eat, Pray, Love' by Elizabeth Gilbert, the new Julia Roberts film, and it encapsulates what I am saying. Smell the air, feel the fabric of life and indulge your spirit and your senses. Half the planet suffers from starvation while the other half becomes fat on excess. So, why, you may ask, should we be encouraging a big appetite? First, remember that you were born with an appetite for life, love, pleasure, adventure. Almost anything that gives you your humanity brings an appetite with it; even curiosity is a kind of appetite. Some people have an appetite for goodness! Just as you can have an appetite for self indulgence you can also nurture an appetite for helping others, an appetite for care and consideration. But try to avoid guilt and bitterness. You can have an appetite for those negative things too and I, for one, want to turn my back on the negative things in life.

Earthly pleasures are gifts from our planet and we should take time out to enjoy them. Most of us are too busy watching the ticking of the clock to really enjoy our bodies and the senses which connect us to the world outside. So breathe deeply, sit still for a moment and reconnect. Think about the things that are really important to you and not just the next deadline. Here is a recipe for those with big appetites. First engage in some physical and spiritual cleansing. Turn off the phones, the computer and the TV. Find an hour to be alone. Then fill a bath tub with warm water. Add sweet smelling oils and herbs and soak for a while allowing the tensions to dissolve away. Rinse with fresh water and moisturise well. Then sit in loose fitting garments to indulge your appetite. Pile your plate high with your favourite music. Make it uplifting, joyous, fun, jubilant or thoughtful. The choice is yours. Add some morsels of your favourite food - food you can take your time over and savour. Add a drink of your choice - perhaps something that is a little indulgent for the occasion. Allow yourself to enjoy guilt free pampering once in a while and acknowledge your appetite for life - after all, you have earned it.
