Hockey Players And Chiropractors Make A Good Team

Injuries are a part of life as a hockey player. Hockey players, in many ways, are more prone to injuries than their counterparts in other sports, such as baseball or basketball players. Hockey is a high-impact sport, much like football, and on skates hockey players move faster than most athletes. As a result, it should not come as a surprise hockey players suffer injuries when they play. Of all of the possible injuries out there, groin injuries can be among the most debilitating.

When you are suffering from a groin injury, it can make it impossible to run, or walk, or even to stand up straight. In many cases, just shifting on the couch with a groin injury can hurt. This is because the muscles and bones in the groin area serve an important purpose. They connect your legs to your back. When the groin is injured, it can affect all sorts of movement because of its location in the body.

Fortunately, there is help for hockey players out there. Chiropractic services can go a long way towards not just treating groin injuries when they occur, but helping you prevent them in the first place. Licensed chiropractors are known for their skill in treating spinal injuries and back pain, but they are trained in much more than just the back. They understand that treating the muscles, bones, and joints that extend from the back, including the groin, can go a long way to providing relief for their aching patients.

Many doctors choose to treat groin injuries with a mostly medicated approach, providing pain relievers to comfort the patient and corticosteroids to reduce inflammation. In contrast, doctors trained in chiropractic look at a groin injury as being the result of a potential misalignment with the back. If a misaligned back and pelvis are not treated properly, not only will recovery be slower and more painful, but the chance for the patient to suffer another groin injury is increased because the groin is now in a vulnerable position.

Part of the job of a physical therapist, especially one who is a sports injury specialist, is in training an athlete in the best practices to keep them from repeating an injury. Proper stretching exercises are essential in helping the hockey player from suffering from recurring groin injuries. There are a number of stretching exercises, such as the stick stretch, the lunge stretch, and the abducted anterior pelvic nutation, or AAPN, stretch that can help. A chiropractor can teach you the proper way to perform these stretches, which condition the groin muscles to withstand the kind of abuse they'll take on the ice.

If you are a hockey player, you owe it to yourself to visit a sports chiropractor, whether you have already suffered a injury and require treatment, or are just trying to prevent the types of groin injuries that can leave you on the bench for long periods of time. Chiropractors have the expertise needed to help you get back into playing form.
