They all look quite similar, since they feature a green triangle and a golden kangaroo. However, different terms can actually mean slightly different things. Food packaging suppliers must follow strict rules whenever they apply these labels. You can be a more informed shopper by learning more about these interesting labels. Who is Allowed to Use the Label? Before delving into what different labels mean, it helps to have an idea about who is qualified to use an Australian Made, Australian Grown label. Any company or manufacturer who wishes to use such a label must apply for a licence first. They also have to pay an annual fee in order to display the label on their products. Anyone who is suspicious about the authenticity of an Australian Made label can double-check it by visiting www.australiangrown.net.au and checking the directory. What the Different Labels Mean - Suppliers specialising in food packaging and shopping bags place the familiar green triangle/golden kangaroo logo on all of the different Australian Made products, you've probably noticed that different terms are sometimes used. What's the difference between "Product of Australia" and "Made in Australia," anyway? You can find out about the small but important differences in these various labels below. Product of Australia - Products that have this label on their packaging have been virtually completely manufactured and processed right in Australia. Additionally, all of their significant ingredients are from Australia. This label signifies products that are usually completely Australian in origin. If you're concerned about keeping as much of your money in Australia as possible, buy products with this label whenever possible. Made in Australia - The Made in Australia label denotes products that have been significantly developed in Australia. Also, at least 50% of their cost has been incurred on Australian soil. This means that the Australian economy has benefited considerably from these products. Note, however, that the label says nothing about whether or not these products' ingredients originate in Australia. If that is a priority of yours, you should stick with "Product of Australia" products. Australian Grown - The Australian Grown label can be placed on products whose significant ingredients have been grown in Australia. Australian Owned - Many times, products that are produced in Australia are owned by overseas organisations. If you'd like to spend your money with companies that are owned by Australians, you should look for labels that include this verbiage. Many times, the "Australian Owned" label is combined with one of the preceding labels; "Australian Grown/Australian Owned" or "Product of Australia/Australian Owned" are two variations that you might see. It's just one more way for you to be informed about where the money you spend goes.
