You can store and keep a DVD media durable if you will use the write-once DVD media, use a jewel or video casing for DVD storage, handle it with care, clean DVDs with the appropriate materials, keep it away from direct heat and light, appropriately label the disc with care, keep the disc dust-free, have your DVD drive or player always clean, and prefer high-quality DVD media. DVDs are credible resources of archiving your important files safely. However, DVDs can be damaged if proper care is not applied. A DVD can store your important media for as long as fifty years depending on how you will take care of it. To keep your important files and media safely stored follow the basic tips in keeping your DVDs durable: Use the write-once DVD media Write-once DVDs are dyed-base and can last longer compared to rewritable DVDs. Use a write-once DVD media to secure that your files can never be over-written. Write-once DVDs also cost lesser compared to rewritable DVDs. Use a jewel or video casing for DVD storage Store your DVDs on a jewel case or video case. This is to ensure the discs for protection from dust and dirt. If you have bought a stack of DVDs, make sure to keep the spindle stack covered at all times. Once you have use a DVD, always place it in a durable disc casing designed for DVDs. Also store it in a flat surface. Handle it with care Handle DVDs with utmost care. Since it is a very sensitive storage device, avoid having your fingerprints marked on the disc. Use the edge or the hole in the center in holding a DVD. Do not force or pull DVDs out from your disc drives or players. This will tend to damage and scratch the disc's sensitive area where files are stored. Clean DVDs with the appropriate materials Lint-free cloth, compressed air, and a liquid cleanser are the appropriate materials that you can use in cleaning a DVD. Never use any type of materials in wiping and cleaning your DVDs. Doing so may result to scratching and damaging it. Apply a uniform stroke using a lint-free cloth when cleaning the disc surface. Start wiping the inner surface to the outward direction of the disc. Do not clean the disc surface with a circular stroke. Keep it away from direct heat and light Never store or leave your DVDs in direct heat and light. Direct heat and light can affect the dye layer of the DVD. Once the dye layer is heavily exposed to light it can be damaged. The files embedded on it will no longer be readable. Remember to also allow the disc to come on a room temperature before you can use it. Appropriately label the disc with care Labeling the discs must be appropriately handled. Unmanaged disc labels may cause misalignments when place on drivers and DVD players. Adhesive application should also be applied in a full symmetry to balance the disc when being in use. Use a water-based pen when hand-writing labels on the discs. Keep the disc dust-free Dust is the number one factor that causes disruption and damages on both discs and reading device. Also maintain your DVDs to be dust-free as possible to optimized quality. Once dusts accumulate, always clean your DVDs with the appropriate cleaning instructions given earlier. Have your DVD drive or player always clean Also keep your drivers and DVD players clean. This is to ensure that both equipments will perfectly work well when being used. Accumulation of dusts in your drivers and DVD player can affect the DVD place unto it. It is suggested to clean your drivers and DVD players with a lens cleaning discs at least once in every six months. This is to avoid dust and dirt build up. Prefer high-quality DVD media When buying DVDs, make sure that it is of high quality. Technological studies recommend preferring branded and high quality DVD media to ensure a reliable and standardized quality of storage device. It is practical to ensure quality especially when the files stored are very important. Finally, keep your DVDs in a dry and safe storage to protect it from humidity and other damaging factors.
