By : Erik Parsons

Coeliac food is the diet that is recommended for individuals who have coeliac disease. This disease is characterized by intolerance of foods containing gluten such as rye, wheat, barley, grains as well as some of the oats. The body reacts to gluten that leads to sensitivity reactions to the intestines of the affected individual. This reaction will destroy the functions of the intestine and impairs the absorption of nutrients from foods and can only be avoided if the person eliminates foods which contain gluten.

Coeliac disease has symptoms that may vary depending on age but with similarities as the symptoms usually occurs on the digestive tract. For infants and growing children, symptoms may present as having diarrhea or constipation (especially after intake of gluten based foods), loss of appetite, anemia, and malnutrition. As for adults, there would be feeling of tiredness all the time, iron deficiency anemia, and stomach symptoms such as abdominal distention and diarrhea. The deficiency of essential vitamins is also present which may lead to slow growth and poor memory.

Eliminate Gluten in the Diet

The only thing that can help in avoiding gluten sensitivity reaction is to eliminate the foods containing this substance. Gluten has a component which is known as the "gliadin" that causes the reactions in the intestines. The elimination of gluten is not temporary—it should be for a lifetime. The main reason is that body is continually sensitive to this substance just like an allergy. Eliminating foods containing gluten is the only thing you can do to prevent symptoms from the disease coupled with exercise and a healthy lifestyle.

The damage in the intestines can be offset if you completely remove gluten from your diet. Even traces of gluten will lead to reactions even if it doesn't show its symptoms immediately. So keep in mind that you should be aware of what you are eating and refer to a registered dietician so he/she can recommend you proper coeliac food.

Foods that Contains Gluten

Several foods that we see every day contains gluten and should be checked. Breads, pastries, pies, cookies, as well as pastas are on the list as they came from wheat, rye as well as grains. If you're shopping for food also, make sure that it is labeled as "gluten-free". As people with celiac disease are growing in number, governments and states now required the labeling of food products that contains or does not contains gluten.

So when your shopping for dry goods, make sure to check the label and nutrition facts so you will be able to avoid products containing gluten. Having coeliac disease should never keep you from living a normal life. Just like other diseases that need restrictions, a gluten free diet must be followed strictly so you won't be suffer from the symptoms of this nasty disease that can lead to serious complications that may threaten your life. Eat well and maintain an active lifestyle. Have a control at your disease by controlling it through your diet.
