Sleep On Your Side

Snoring is a loud form of breathing when you sleep that comes either from the nose or the mouth. It ultimately becomes a problem if breathing stops because of it. Snoring can be quite irritating and annoying at times since you have to put up with all the noise that your spouse or partner is making. This condition occurs when your breathing is constricted due to blocked airways. One of the most effective ways to prevent snoring is to sleep on your side since it keeps your airways open by relaxing your throat.

Avoid Alcohol

There are some people who believe that drinking alcohol will help them get to sleep. It works most, if not all of the time but what we don't know is that alcohol actually is one of the major causes of snoring. Drinking alcohol before you sleep affects your central nervous system by causing your throat muscles to loosen up paving the way for constricted breathing. It limits the air that passes through your airways.

Don't Drink Milk

Your grandma may have told you over and over again that drinking warm milk before you sleep will give you a good night sleep. It works for some, but with it comes snoring as well. Milk and other dairy products such as yogurt and cheese contribute to the buildup of mucus in your throat causing your airways to be blocked. Milk should be avoided if snoring is a constant problem. Try drinking herbal teas instead.

Don't Binge

Sleeping with a full stomach will eventually put pressure on your stomach and the diaphragm causing you limited breathing. Avoid eating too much before you sleep or at least give some time for the food to be digested before lying down so you'll feel a lot better and won't snore. Avoid fatty and starchy foods such as cakes, pizza and chocolates. Eating with a full stomach will not only make you snore but can cause other health disorders such as heartburn, as well.

Use Firm Pillows

Another way of keeping your airways open so you won't snore is to use a firm pillow when sleeping. Soft pillows will relax your muscles and will eventually block your airways. Firm pillows will keep your head elevated so you can breathe easily. It will not only prevent you from snoring and annoying whoever it is beside you, but will ultimately correct your posture over time, too.
