The initial thing most people think of when they think of support canines are the Guide Canines for the blind. Often German shepherds, guide canines really come from several breeds. These canines are smart, well skilled and able to deal with several situations for their master/companion. Back fifty or more years ago, the guide canine was about the only kind of guide canine people had heard of. In a lot of little towns across the country, a nearby blind individual with a guide canine often became nearby celebrities and also the blind individual needed to be patient in explaining to friends and family that the canine was not truly a pet but was an aide in life. The blind individual needed to go to school and learn to work with the new companion. The canine companion had been skilled by volunteers on everything from crossing the street to sitting quietly while the master was going about his business. The canine also needed to be taught to not make messes wherever and whenever it wanted. Puppy pads might not have been obtainable at that time but in today's coaching, the puppy pads need to be a component of the coaching procedure. Today the support canine world has expanded far beyond the guide canines for the blind. There are now canines that help the hearing impaired and those who help people in wheelchairs. There are canines which are companions for individuals suffering from PTSD. These canines are often fostered as puppies and given preliminary coaching from volunteers, including coaching the canine and puppy housebreaking them. An example of this was when the Abby Scuto character (the forensic scientist played by Paulie Parette) on NCIS fostered a pup as a secondary storyline on a show. After the preliminary coaching and housebreaking, the canines are evaluated and provided their advanced coaching for whichever "service" they will probably be performing. If operating as an information canine, they discover to walk with their masters and how to protect their masters at street corners and elsewhere. If operating with the hearing impaired, they discover to respond to the sounds of doorbells and also the needs for their hearing impaired masters. If the prospective support is for someone who is wheelchair bound, then the canine learns to fetch and carry and maybe even wear "saddle bags" which are reachable by their wheelchair bound masters. These canines learn to "heel" on the wheelchair instead of on the walking heel of the master. Utilizing puppy pads for coaching is just a component of the coaching of these "man's greatest friends" where the friendship is really a partnership that has advantages for both humans and canines.
