Why you need to do Keyword Research Before Setting up your Website

Doing keyword research is an essential skill that every internet marketer should know about.

Most sites on the internet are floating around there out there, and the only way you find them is by seeing a good ad and visiting them, or landing there quite by accident. The reason they are not listed on the first page or two of the search engines is because they haven't been keyword optimized.

If you own a website that hasn't been keyword optimized, you will need to do a lot of PPC or other forms of advertising to get visitors. It would be great if you didn't have to advertise and your visitors all found you through the search engines?

Here are the steps that any good Internet Marketer goes through before he even starts putting his site together.

1. Compiling a list of Keywords and Keyword Phrases

The best way to do this is to go to some of the good keyword search sites out there such as Google Keyword Tool, or Wordtracker and type your phrases into the search. The tool will then tell you how many people are actually searching for this keyword on a monthly basis, as well as give you similar suggestions that you may not have thought of.

It is a good idea to put a list together for yourself on a program like Excel. Look at your list and put yourself in your prospects shoes. Ask yourself what he would type in if he were looking for something to buy.

2. Find out What your Competition is doing

Now that you have a list of keywords and the number of searches, you must now see how much competition is out there for your particular keyword phrase. You can do this by typing your keywords into the search engines at Google and Yahoo and see what the amount of competing sites is. If you type you keyword like this "Keyword" the exact amount of competition that is competing for the keyword will show up, which should be a lot less than the keyword typed in without inverted commas. Any keyword with less than 1000 competing sites with inverted commas should be okay to target.

3, Work out the Keyword Effectiveness Index

To work out the keyword effectiveness index or KEI there is a formula: P²/C.

P = monthly keyword searches and C= number of exact match search results.

This calculation will give you a ratio. Try and stick to keywords with a greater KEI ratio. In other words the greater the KEI ratio, the better.

Although time consuming, keyword research is a necessary task to get you ranking well on the Search Engines. Nichebot is a keyword research tool that will make life easier for you. Nichebot will take all the pain out of keyword research by giving you all the different search engine results on one site. Nichebot will give you all the information you need relating to searches, competition and KEI on one page.

I would be lost without this keyword tool. I use it for all my articles, adverts and blog posts, and it saves me loads of time. Try it and see for yourself. http://www.nichebot.com/members/go.php?r=14786&i=l21
