As a marketer your goal is to increase traffic for your site, and transform that traffic into direct conversions. A good web design is often the key to generating return visitors and increasing sales. Three factors to consider when developing a website are: 1. The purpose of the site This may seem obvious but companies often overlook what it is they are trying to achieve through their website and how their users will benefit from it. Good design should solve customer’s problems and not create them. 2. Your audience People visiting your site are there for a specific reason and it is important to know what that reason is. What are your customers looking for and how are you going to deliver it to them? When planning your website you must consider the characteristics of your demographic- what’s their experience with what you’re selling, how do they like to obtain information, and so on. 3. Content Creating a list of the content you’re going to present should be your starting point. Organizing it according to the needs of your audience is the second and most important step. Think about creating: - A powerful sales message for your home page Your site’s home page is the space that introduces your company, and expresses your value proposition- why a customer should be buying from you and not someone else. The home page also introduces the other pages of the site, with calls-to-action that encourage customers to continue clicking. - Headlines that matter to your customers Headlines are written to be captivating, to encourage visitors to read the subheading, and then the body of text, which states what exactly it is that you’re offering. In other words, the heading shouldn’t sell the product, it should sell the text that sells the product. - Problem/Solution leads You want to make sure that your content connects closely with your readers and their specific problems. Your research will indicate the various types of problems or setbacks people have regarding a specific issue- list those while offering their solutions. Generally speaking people don’t like to admit they have a problem- unless they know there is an available solution. - Benefits of your product that will interest customers When selling a product or service it’s more important to sell its benefits then it is to sell its features. Think about it, people who are on diets are more interested in how an energy bar is going to make them lose weight then they are in its ingredients. A well constructed website can mean the difference of the world in terms of online sales. While there are many DIY solutions for web design, commissioning third-party experts is often well worth it.
