How To Rent a Dumpster

There are lots of reasons to rent a dumpster: you might be doing a big spring cleaning, pruning the trees around your home, or a big cleanup of your basement, garage or attack. Or, you might be getting contractors in to do a bigger job: replacing a deck, removing carpet and flooring from your home, or carrying out a roof replacement or other major renovations.

You can rent a dumpster in a range of sizes to cater for both residential and commercial jobs. Dumpsters generally range from 10 cubic yards to 40 cubic yards, and dumpsters may be front loading, rear loading or roll off trucks. Waste management companies come to your property when your cleanup project is complete and haul your trash away, which makes it convenient for you. Here's a quick overview of what to consider when renting a dumpster.

Size

Size matters when it comes to a dumpster. It's important to rent the right size dumpster for the job when you're embarking on a clean up or a renovation. You don't want to pay for a dumpster that's miles bigger than what you require, or find that your smaller dumpster fills up faster than you expected. If in doubt, contact a waste management specialist for a consultation. Dumpsters are generally available in shorter sizes to accommodate your available space.

A 10 or 15 yard dumpster is generally suitable for a wide range of smaller jobs, such as a spring clean or tidy up of the backyard. If you're doing a large cleanup of a basement, attic or garage, or completely removing the flooring or carpeting in a large house, a 20 yard dumpster generally works best. 20 yard dumpsters are also good if you're disposing of large amounts of dirt or concrete. Contractors generally choose 30 or 40 yard dumpsters for home and commercial renovations – these dumpsters are perfect for window or roof replacements for large homes and commercial spaces, and of course large volumes of trash and cardboard.

Type

Dumpsters are loaded and transported differently; they're generally available as front loaders, rear loaders, or roll offs. With front loading dumpsters, the trash receptacle is lifted over the dump truck, and the trash is deposited into the front of the truck. Rear loading dumpsters have a slightly more complicated mechanism – with these dumpsters, winches and straps are used to tilt the trash receptacle upwards, so the refuse falls into the rear of the truck. Your dumpster specialist should be able to recommend the type of dumpster that you require for your trash removal needs.

Cost

Different dumpster companies have different pricing and fee structures. Some companies charge by weight, usually by the ton, and other dumpster companies offer flat rates by the day, week or month. Always ring around and talk to several waste management companies to ensure that you get a good quote and a dumpster that suits your needs.
