Senior Care: 4 Alternatives to Nursing Homes

[Valid RSS feed]  Category Rss Feed - http://www.articlesbacklink.com/rss.php?rss=92
By : Mark Etinger

When you're faced with caring for an elderly loved one, the option of nursing home placement is one that many people struggle with. While there are still many legitimate nursing home institutions, the idea of simply turning over a parent or loved one to the care of strangers in their most fragile years, is one that most people don't want to consider. It's also very hard for the senior in question. While many hate the idea of being a burden to their loved ones, the idea of simply being handed over to a cold and inhospitable institution is incredibly disconcerting, and sometimes terrifying. Luckily for all parties involved, there are many senior care alternatives to nursing homes that provide elderly patients with the senior care they need, without isolating them from friends, family, and an independent life—something that may happen if they are put in a nursing home.

Senior Care Options:

1) Senior care placement. Many household staffing companies have qualified employees on staff who specialize in in-home senior care. This can be a really great alternative because the said relative can stay in familiar surroundings and still be around love ones every day. It also a large part of the work-load off of the relatives because a qualified professional is able to cater to the needs of the senior, which can sometimes, be quite demanding. Depending on the household staffing company and the type of services rendered, Medicare, long-term care insurance, and veterans' benefits may cover some of the necessary costs of in-home senior care.

2) Look into adult day care. Many of these centers recreational and meal services with medical, nursing, psychiatric and therapeutic services. This is an attractive option for many working individuals who don't want to leave their elderly relative home alone all day, but still want them to have a home to come to at night. It also provides a great setting for social interaction while integrating stimulating activities.

3) Consult independent living centers. These facilities are similar to adult day care centers, but they also provide the attendees with intensive physical therapy sessions. These sessions are designed to help improve certain skills your loved one may have forgotten how to do. This provides the best of both worlds for seniors: they can get the senior care they need from medical professionals, while still having that family link they need from living at home.

4) For those older relatives who are still in good shape, health-wise, you can look into a Retirement Apartment facility. Many seniors have such a hard time with the inevitabilities of aging, because they feel they lose their independence. Well with a retirement apartment facility, seniors can still have their own apartments, most of which already come furnished. In addition, they also can have housekeeping, personal care, social activities, and events, all under one roof. Some facilities serve meals cafeteria style, some have a "room service" option, and others come equipped with kitchens that allow the resident to prepare their own meals in their apartment.
