The health care field will always remain popular because people always get sick. Changes in the field do not bar entrance from it – if anything they make it easier to enter and learn new methods and techniques. Becoming an EMT means that you should be comfortable with seeing blood and at least know about basic first aid supplies and medical kits. Read on for a more detailed description about how you can be paid to save lives on a daily basis. 1. EMT-Basic Certificate Program : Not nearly as long as medical school, an EMT-Basic Certificate Program is a good way to begin your training with diagnostic equipment and first aid supplies. These programs typically last 3 months and are relatively inexpensive. Courses typically cover trauma response, respiratory assistance, and cardiac emergencies. The curriculum is nationally based, so it doesn't matter where you take the class. 2. The Test: Administered in two parts, a written and skills analysis test, the comprehensive test is usually taken in tandem with state- certified organizations. After this you will be comfortable with medical kits and IV supplies, as well as administering other procedural duties. 3. State License: While the requirements for licensure vary according to state, all states do require one. EMTs have to renew their license every couple of years. This demonstrates an EMTs ability to stay up with the changes and technological advances of a constantly shifting field. 4. Work: EMTs often work beside firefighters and policemen in high adrenaline arenas. With real life experience comes the ability to more easily deal with pressure, as well as knowing what to do in different scenarios. The more experience you have dealing with first aid equipment in the field, the more likely you are to make more money down the line. As in most occupations, the more you know, the better you will be paid. 5. Moving Up: If you want to become an EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic you will have to take more classes and tests. The NREMT exams allow EMTs to perform pre-hospital procedures like intubating patients and using diagnostic equipment to administer medicines. You will have to take an EKG interpretation class, study physiology or advanced human anatomy, and have about a year of work experience. While you're a student, you may be able to live for free in a fire station, or have your tuition paid for by the fire station. Becoming an EMT means that you will be saving lives. High energy and a passion for helping people are must haves if you want to go a step further to become a paramedic. This rewarding career is constantly in high demand and you will certainly have little issue finding a job.
