It is commonly believed, and undertstandably so, the music makes the party... Therefore the job of the wedding DJ is not to be underestimated. Always try find a wedding DJ that has a good few years experience, and is doing the job on a full-time basis.

Be sure to "shop around", so to speak, before making any choices. Contact the most recent references provided, view online video demos or if possible arrange to attend a wedding reception as an observer. You will then be able to assess the wedding DJ's ability to co-ordinate a wedding.

It is important to consult with the wedding DJ ahead of the event (9-18 months) in order to discuss details such as the location of the wedding. Certain locations will require extensive set up or tear down and will cost more. Certain lighting might not work particularly well in certain areas, and many venues have regulations around effects lighting. Make sure that the DJ has sufficient equipment and sound power for the number of guests that you are expecting. Back-up equipment and a back-up DJ is required for those exceptional situations. A professional wedding DJ should also discuss with you other details like dance floors, DJ set up and seating arrangements. You're most likely to have a balance of young and old guests at the reception, so the DJ needs to be able to balance the volume correctly. The volume should not be offensive but loud enough to generate energy and enthusiasm. Try to find a DJ that is both professional and charismatic at the same time.

Request to view the wedding DJ's music library, give him a list of your personal preferences and allow him to help create a wedding playlist that will best highlight the wedding theme .It is best to give the wedding DJ flexibility in song choice, so that he or she can best play music suited to the crowd at hand. It is important to remember that the wedding DJ may also be your MC, or master of ceremonies. The wedding DJ can help coordinate timelines, announcements, speeches, and other service providers, like photographers and caterers. The wedding DJ must therefore be well informed of when all the events will take place during the wedding ceremony.

Determine if the wedding DJ has liability insurance to perform in all facilities. Many banquet facilities require certificates of insurance before letting mobile sound systems work at events in their facility. Many countries have specific legal requirements for professional DJs, so keep an eye out for these. This is an organization that issues licenses to any DJ, company or building where music is played. Ensure that the company/wedding DJ provides you with a legal contract to sign so that you will be protected in the event that the company /wedding DJ fails to meet their obligations under the agreement.
