Soccer Jersey Numbers

There are many things to consider when it comes to the world of soccer and deciding upon soccer jersey numbers are just one of the things that you need to think about. When kids are young and just starting out in the sport, they may not know the meaning behind a number or when things even began for getting one. They originally stood for the line-up of players but over the years, things have changed when getting assigned a number but the one thing that remains steady is that the number one is always the goalie and probably always will be.

As things change in each country, the numbers that players are assigned have changed in pattern. Over the years things have changed greatly when it comes to this. At one time, one thru eleven was for the starting players on the team. Now you may be given one of those numbers even if you are not a starting player. You may have also found that soccer jersey numbers twelve thru thirty-two were for the midfielders, forwards and so one. Again, this rule has changed has changed as well because sometimes you have to go with availability.

Another thing that you have to keep in mind is that if a player retires or is one of the super stars so to speak of the team, there number may be retired on the team. This means that no matter whom else comes along, those particular soccer jersey numbers will never be used for another player again on that team. This not only shows the loyalty that the player had for the club but also the loyalty that the club had for the player. You may even see their jersey number hanging in the stadium for which he used to play as well.

One of the standards that has generally been the same and will probably not change is that the higher the numbers get means that you are a back up player or second string. There really is not a rule in general now that states what a particular number means but the higher up in soccer jersey numbers are usually the players that sit out more than play. You will also find that these are the players that are most likely fresh out of the academy and have not played professionally much at that time.

There is plenty of research that you can do on what soccer jersey numbers mean but one thing you will find is that when a young person first starts out playing, they will generally pick a number that means something to them. This will be because they have a favorite player or perhaps the number means something significant to them. Sometimes they may get lucky enough to be able to have that number when they turn professional and other times they may just have to go with what they are given. Either way, when you are given a number it can become very significant to the player and stick with them.
