Every company is divided into separate departments to keep things running smoothly and to bring order to everyday business. One of the most important departments in your business is the shipping department. While other departments are vital, it is this department that will prepare goods for shipment to the customers. 1. Identifying the product. The first thing that a shipping employee should do is make sure that the product is what the customer ordered. Things should be correct on the packing label and there should be no questions as to the address or name. If this is an international shipment, make sure that the address is written correctly for the foreign country. The product needs to be in line with any regulations of foreign countries. 2. Box or bag the product. Every company has their own way of shipping things. The item should be packaged securely, especially if it is breakable in any way or will be shipped overseas. Some customers will have special instructions on their order. Make certain that there are not any special instructions before taping the box closed or sealing the bag. Bagging some items is okay as long as it is sealed securely. You can help prevent damage or loss to the package by taping or sealing it completely before it is shipped. 3. Label the package. The label's information should be completely accurate. Any special instructions should be on the package for the shipping company. This might include keeping the package upright, perishable items or fragile items. Make certain to use the shipping method requested by the customer. Express shipping, ground shipping, air shipping and cargo shipping are some of the ways that items can be sent. Some packages will be shipped domestically while others will be international shipments. Labels should be clear and readily accessible. 4. Be prepared for the shipping company. It is the responsibility of the shipping department to have things ready for pickup when the shipping company arrives. As the owner of the company, it is your responsibility to hire a shipping company that will deliver your company's good into the hands of your customers. You need to find a shipping company that will give you comparable pricing and good service. 5. Wait for feedback. If there is a problem, your customers will let you know. Customer questions and complaints should be handled by someone with great patience and knowledge about the department. You want customers to continue shopping with your business, so give them the satisfaction they need and deserve. Shipping departments vary from company to company. The bigger the company, the bigger the shipping department must be. A supervisor in the shipping department should oversee all workers. Every worker should have complete understanding of his or her responsibilities. Taking orders, processing payments, reviewing inventory, and getting items ready for shipping - it's all necessary. Take time to get your items processed correctly and shipped out so that you can continue to enjoy the benefits of a well-run, organized business.
