Many companies are attracted by the flexibility of cloud computing but are worried about security concerns. They feel that not only is the data outside their control but it might be vulnerable to access by competitors or to loss by other means. For this reason some companies prefer to choose private cloud hosting. Such private hosting still retains many of the good points associated with cloud computing but the possibility of data loss is seen to be much less. Although data is held by a third party service provider it is kept in a safe environment behind secure firewalls. This reduces security concerns because the private environment cannot be accessed by other clients of the service provider. The benefits of a cloud host include the possibility of employing fewer full time IT staff because system maintenance may be performed by the hosting service provider for a reasonable price. The enterprise may keep IT staff to perform high value operations such as the development of innovative systems rather than routine maintenance functions. Businesses that need to increase the efficiency of their operations can find the appropriate flexibility through a private hosting solution. This avoids the need for the enterprise to increase its in house server capacity risking the possibility that capacity will be standing idle for much of the year. By choosing this option the enterprise may pay fees only for the capacity that is actually needed. It is no longer necessary to incur unnecessary costs on extra capacity that may be wasted. The flexibility of the cloud is a strong argument in its favor. This combination of security and flexibility may be the correct solution for many different types of enterprise. In particular it may be the ideal solution for the small or medium enterprise that cannot take on the large numbers of IT staff that would otherwise be required to maintain the level of systems that they require. Instead, these smaller companies may take the flexible option of paying only for what they use. The service provider can offer the system maintenance that would otherwise be done in house, and at times when not so much maintenance is needed the company can reduce the level of service it is paying for. There is no need to maintain expensive IT staff that may not be kept busy at all times of the year. The service provider may increase the security of their client by providing security audits if needed. These can look at any possible vulnerability in the systems of the client and take steps to render them more secure. This computing option may therefore turn out to be more secure than in-house solutions. Another service that may be offered is the provision of appropriate backup so that the client enterprise is not damaged unnecessarily if there is an emergency situation that leads to the loss of data. The service provider may also come up with a disaster emergency plan to ensure that any catastrophic data loss does not interrupt the business operations. For these reasons private cloud hosting could be the appropriate solution for all kinds of corporation. Levels of capacity that were considered impossible could be brought within reach by the use of these flexible options.
