Outdoor Pools

Swimming in London is one of the most fun activities you can take part in, however, if you can do it outdoors it is even better. Here are a few outdoor spots in London that are worth checking out.

Tooting Lido

London's biggest Lido is Tooting Lido which, as the name suggests, is based in Tooting in the south of the city. It measures almost exactly one hundred yards long and so is a real test for those that aren't used to swimming in open waters as indoor pools rarely measure as long and you will often get a break at the end of each length to catch your breath as you turn around and come back the other way. It is open to club members all year round (making for a bracing winter's dip) and the general public in the summer months.

Brockwell Lido

Brockwell Lido is another Lido that is based in the south of London, this time on the north side of Brockwell Park. In effect it is a 50m pool - Olympic sized - and has an award winning café next to it which can offer some rare treats while you dry off after a hard swim. At the moment Brockwell Lido is only open in the summer months although there are plans to have limited opening hours in the winter of 2012-13. It also has a gym right next to it which means that if you are so inclined you can jump out of the water and onto an exercise bike.

The Serpentine Lake

The Serpentine Lake isn't a lido like the other two but simply a roped off bit of the Serpentine where members of the public are welcome to swim for a small entrance fee. It is true open water lake swimming and short of going to the sea or the Thames probably the closest you're going to get to proper waves. Because it is a lake you share it with all the nature in the like and it's not uncommon for a swan or duck to drift into the roped off area, which can make for an interesting surprise when you're out swimming in the morning.

As you can see there are plenty of outdoor swimming opportunities in London, however, if you fancy seeing the capital's landmarks in a slightly more relaxed manner than a hot air balloon ride over the city is always a treat.
