Whether at home or at the workplace, things need to be hung on the walls and fixtures need to be put up. In the past, our forefathers used to accomplish this task with the help of nail and hammer and although effective, the chore of hammering nails into the wall was not just time consuming but tedious as well. The invention of the hammer drill over a period of time was obviously greeted with joy and relief since it rendered this arduous task a lot easier. The hammer drill is sometimes called the hammering drill or roto-drill because it accomplishes the hammering action with the help of a drill which rotates at a speed high enough to cause serious impact on the surface it is being used on. Thus, the hammering action of such a device will produce rapid but strong hammer thrust which makes the task of pulverizing or drilling materials easy and it also involves less effort. If the main intention behind purchasing this kind of tool is to make extremely large holes then you should choose from amongst larger ones because they would provide more impact. It is also possible to use hammer drills on stones and masonry. Since these can go through materials as tough as masonry and stones, it goes without saying that such devices are extremely powerful and hence must be handled with great care. In case you want your hammer drill to be multi-functional then you should purchase one which has interchangeable drills and bits. In terms of the source of power there are two kinds of hammer drills, the first type being one which runs on battery and the fact that they are battery-operated makes them appropriate for short term usage. The second kind runs on electricity directly from the power plugs and so these are stronger and more powerful. However there is a drawback to this kind of hammer drill too and that is, they aren't portable and they can be quite bulky at times too. While purchasing a hammer drill you might as well purchase a pair of safety goggles and ear plugs too because when the drill is in operation it would throw dust particles or brick dust randomly in all directions. So if your eyes are not protected then there is a chance that such tiny particles would fly into your delicate eyes and pose a hazard. Also, these drills tend to produce very loud noise and therefore it is advisable to use ear plugs when these devices are in operation for the fear of causing damage to your ears. Shopping for a hammer drill calls for pre-shopping homework to be done. You need to consider what kind of materials you will be using the drill on, the frequency of usage and the availability of electricity in the place where you will be using the drill before you make your choice and settle on a particular model which appeals to you the most. In case you just need to use it for a single project or for a couple of days then it would make more sense to rent this tool from a tool rental department because it would not only work out to be cheaper but would facilitate successful completion of the job as well.
