Reasons To Consider Investing In Basement Waterproofing

For most people, the home they live in is the largest investment they have. And to protect their investment, it is wise to make sure the home is properly maintained inside and out. But during the maintenance process, one thing that is often overlooked is basement waterproofing. However, with the growing frequency of heavy rainstorms, floods, and hurricanes, waterproofing your lower level may be one of the wisest investments you make.

Consider this fact; insurance companies report that home owner insurance claims for water damage in the basement have risen exponentially in recent years. In most parts of the country, there is a risk of basement flooding at some point during the year. And if you figure that on average a person or family will remain in their home for an average of around 5-7 years, then there's a pretty good chance that water in the basement will be an issue for a great number of home owners at some point while living in their house.

This is where basement waterproofing can come in. While many people believe that a damp basement is simply something they are going to have to live with, what they may not be aware of is that technology in this field (like most others) has advanced in recent years and there have been several new methods developed to keep the water out of your lower level. And many of these methods are actually more affordable than you may think.

Another thing to consider is that while a basement waterproofing job may run you $1500 to $3000 or maybe a little more, it may also open up several hundred additional square feet of livable space.

This valuable space that you once only trusted for storing things-and even then in plastic containers-can now be converted into something cool that the whole family will enjoy like a new game room or bar/entertainment center for watching the big game. Of course, there are other ways to utilize this newly found square footage they may not be as exciting but can still be quite practical; like an additional bedroom so the kids don't have to share anymore, or a home office that can be used to start a new business.

Basement waterproofing will not only make it nicer to live in your house, it could also be worth thousands of additional dollars when it comes time to sell. Consider the fact that the majority of home owners do nothing to keep the water out of their lower level. If your basement is sealed off and ready to be enjoyed without worry about moisture, this could have great appeal to prospective buyers, which is very important in a buyer's real estate market like we are in now.

All in all, there are numerous reasons why basement waterproofing makes sense for home owners in many parts of the country. Just the protection from basement flooding alone is probably worth far more than the investment required. But when you add the fact that you are gaining so much additional living space and adding thousands to the resale value of your house, it makes basement sealing an option worthy of great consideration.
