Outdoor gardening helps to bridge the gap between the suburban homeowner and nature. Planting a flourishing garden in your backyard or installing interesting landscaping is not only relaxing, but it is also enjoyable by yourself, your family members and even your pets. One way to improve the quality of your outdoor garden is to attract local birds to add colour, sound and life to an outdoor space. Most birds can fly, they do this by using specially designed wings which use the air as well as the universal laws of physics to generate upthrust. This allows them to reach places that many other animals can't.

One way to attract bids to your garden is to provide basic needs for them to live. Hummingbird or birdseed feeders are readily available at most home improvement stores. These can be hung in patios or from gardens sheds or anywhere in plain sight. Look for birdseed blends made specifically to attract different types of birds. Some popular blends include seed meant to attract song birds, or colourful birds. Alternatively you can choose to make your own bird feeder to hang in your garden. To do this you will need a pine cone, peanut butter or honey, seed and some simple tools readily found in your gardens sheds. Instructions can be found in various hobby websites online.

Another way to attract birds to your garden is to install a water feature. Not only will the background animation of moving water add ambiance to your back yard or landscape, but the sound of the water will also help attract various wildlife. Water features can range from a simple stone bird bath to an in ground Koi pond. Water features will help attract birds during the drier months as it provides resources for drinking and bathing. You can keep supplies to service your bird bath or water garden in your gardens sheds.

Lastly you can plant various types of shrubs, bushes and flowers to help attract various types of birds to your garden. Brightly coloured flowers will help attract nectar seeking humming birds while larger trees or shrubs can provide nesting materials and nesting space to birds in the springtime. Berry trees and bushes or fruit trees will help attract birds during the summer months when fruit is nearing its ripest. In smaller gardens where a large tree will be too difficult, you can set up inexpensive nesting boxes to adhere to the side of your gardens shed or patio.
