Are You Ready To Be The Boss?

Every year, many people decide to strike out on their own and open their own businesses. Many take over a family business, buy existing businesses or start from scratch with a new invention, concept or product. Most of these businesses will fail in the first year, and few will make it to five years. Even the most ambitious new business owners need guidance in launching their new ventures. Are you cut out to be an entrepreneur? Begin by analyzing the characteristics of successful new business owners.

The most successful entrepreneurs seek out the advice of seasoned professionals and others in their field of business before launching. Many hire small business consultants that will guide them through the minefield that is a new startup. Others seek the advice of a mentor or trusted business colleague to give them objective guidance when starting their businesses. If you accept criticism well, and are willing to seek out the advice of others, you may be well on your way to becoming a successful entrepreneur.

Being an entrepreneur requires a certain degree of uncertainty. There is no guaranteed paycheck, no reassurances that your product or service will be profitable. Many entrepreneurs work long hours for little or no money in the beginning stages of their new businesses. The successful entrepreneur realizes that it may take time to generate a profit and is comfortable with the uncertainty of their business' early success. Entrepreneurs can seek the advice of small business coaches and consultants to help them navigate the rocky times that can sometimes plague new start ups.

You're the boss. There is nobody to force you to work. There is no clock to punch. Successful entrepreneurs motivate themselves to work at their businesses, and are driven by a need for personal success. They keep an eye on the bottom line, and understand the need to pour their best efforts into their venture in order to achieve the best results. They press on through adversity and don't give up easily. They often focus on the end result of their hard work and not the obstacles that plague them on the way to success.

Business startups that succeed are operated by entrepreneurs that understand that things don't always go according to plan. Even the best marketing and business plan may not account for the many issues that may crop up in the course of the early stages of business. They understand the need to go back to the drawing board time and again and tweak their original plan as necessary.

They meet with their small business consultant as many times as needed to come up with the solutions that work for their business. They understand that business development is an evolving process, and are willing to adjust their plans accordingly.

There are many characteristics that will determine whether you're cut out to be an entrepreneur. A flexible approach to your business, a stellar team of expert consultants and a high degree of self motivation are the main characteristics of the successful entrepreneur.
