Ok, so there you are. You've been talking to them for a few minutes, you can sense that you've got a great sense of rapport, and it's about time to pop that question that made you start the conversation in the first place. Maybe you want to ask for their phone number, maybe you want to ask for the sale, but something's missing.

You've been having a great conversation, but sometimes it seems like you are following them into their world, and sometimes it feels like they are following you into yours. This is great if it's a normal conversation between buddies down at the corner coffee shop, but you started this conversation for a reason. You want to ask, but you don't feel you have any authority or credibility. What can you do?

Luckily, there is a simple set of strategies that can slowly build your credibility and authority throughout the conversation, so that when you finally do pop the question, they will be much, much more likely to say yes. What is the secret? In the world of NLP and covert persuasion and hypnosis, it's referred to as "pacing and leading."

Pacing is simply when you match the other person in as many ways as possible. Mimic their body language, how fast they are talking, and their tone of voice. When they move their body slightly, or cross or uncross their legs, you do the same. This will create a deep sense of connection and rapport. But if you stop here, you may get stuck in the friend zone. If you are a salesperson, nothing is worse than hearing, "You're a great guy, and I really like you, but I don't really want to buy your product." Ouch. So close, yet so far.

After rapport has been established, it's time to move from pacing to leading. To create rapport, you need to pace, pace, pace. When they move, you move. Once you've done that a few times, it's your turn to lead. Make some small movements or shifts in the way you are standing or sitting, and wait for them to follow you. If you've developed a strong enough sense of rapport, this will be easy.

After you've moved a little bit a few times, and they've subconsciously copied you, then you are the clear leader, and they are the follower. Which means if you ask a reasonable question, they will almost always say yes. This is great for first dates, job interviews, one on one sales presentations, any time you are in a position where it would be beneficial to be a leader in a one on one conversation, use this technique. You'll be astonished not only how easy this is, but how well it works.
