Home Gifts And Etiquette

There are two sides to the etiquette of home gifts: the gift giver and the recipient. Ultimately both are responsible for proper etiquette. If this is a couple's new home after a wedding, this is technically the time in which some guests may try finishing off getting items from the gift registry they received for the wedding.

However, if it is not really a couple's first home together by today's standards it is considered acceptable for guests to bring or not to bring home gifts. If the hosts prefer to avoid gift giving they should explicitly say so in the invitations.

For these kinds of events there really isn't a limit for price. Use your common sense and decide on what to purchase based on your financial situation and e comfort level of the recipient. Some people prefer simple gifts rather extravagance.

The items should be entertainment, cooking, or decorative in nature. Small kitchen appliances, dining sets, and fine china are all wonderful options for homeowners who love cooking for guests and entertaining. Entertainment gifts like movie boxed sets, music, and board games are great for the fun friends. Wall art and decorations are fantastic for the savvy art enthusiasts. Try and follow their design taste. If you aren't sure then pick neutral items rather than bold ones. Avoid gifts that could induce strong reactions of distaste (even if they are too polite to admit exactly how ugly it is). You really should just tailor your gift to the interests of the person who has the new home.

When you arrive, make small talk before you shove the gift at them. Ask where to place it and then do it yourself-- the hosts are busy-- unless of course, they offer to place it discreetly. And as a host you should be polite and realize that all gifts that are brought should be opened after the party has ended. This will avoid any awkwardness for those who were unable to afford a gift or accidentally forgot. Be polite with a simple "thank you," and avoid gushing or insistent refusal of acceptance.

The etiquette is simple enough that you can use your common sense to guide you through it. Always be gracious and humble and you will be just fine. Home gifts are a wonderful thing to give and/or receive so you should just be happy that you have such good friends.
