Organic Sweeteners

By : Gladys Alvarez

For some time now I have been enlightening you about artificial sweeteners and the dangers to our health and our weight. Some of you may ask, is anything out there safe to ingest without gaining any additional weight or affecting our health and weight?

The following are some high-calorie alternatives, which most likely are not for those with diabetes.

Maple syrup is considered the only large-scale, sustainably-harvested, forest sweetener in the world. It is one of the richest source of minerals found in any sweetener, buy organic.

Organic sugarcane molasses is another sweetener fairly rich in vitamins and minerals and has been purported (like fresh sugar cane) to have "anti-stiffness factors" that break down detrimental calcification.

Coconut palm sugar is available as a sweetener also, but is usually heat-processed, so try to find raw coconut palm sugar.

In South American countries Stevia has been used as a natural sweetener for centuries as well as in Japan. It is fast becoming popular in many countries due to its zero glycemic index and zero calories. Let us not forget that cancer cells thrive on sugars and fats. So we should be careful of the amount of sugar we consume as well as the amount of fats.

Beware of products that are advertised as natural and are not organic. Remember that if a product is processed, very likely it will contain additives and chemicals that are detrimental to our health in general.

Are we aware that the big sugar companies donate incredible amounts of dollars, somewhere in the millions to both political parties in order to make sure that Congress keeps tariffs high on foreign sugar so that the sugar industry in the US can charge higher prices thereby benefitting those companies who produce corn syrup (fructose) which is a sugar substitute and is added to many of the products we consume, like candy, sodas, etc. Corn syrup is a cheaper sweetener substitute. Read the labels!

Sucralose (Splenda) has turned out to be one of our favorite sugar substitutes now a days, but according to some studies, Sucralose alters the microflora in the intestine and "exerts numerous adverse effects", including weight gain. We find more and more often that people who are constant users of drinks with artificial sweeteners, gain weight instead of losing it. Is this something we want to be consuming?

The more you read and research, as with any topic, there are pros-and-cons, but I tend to lean, for our health's sake, toward the premise that sucralose is an organochloride compound. and that most of the derivatives of this type of compound are INSECTICIDES, HERBICIDES AND PESTICIDES.
