Old photographs are actually stored as reminders of memorable moments and events in people's lives. Most people regard old photographs as items of great value and are highly treasured. Good photo storage is actually very essential as it helps preserve the photos for generations to come. Storing photos by sticking them on albums require a few considerations to be made for the photos to last long. One of the mistakes that most people make while storing old photos is storing them in a hurry. Actually, careful storage of old photographs requires a minimum of 5 minutes per photo to ensure that the photo is precisely stored and fits comfortably.

Moving old photos from stick free albums to acid free storage boxes.

In most cases, old photographs are preserved by gluing them on cardboards and other magnetic boards and albums which essentially damage the photos over time. Transferring them to commercial acid albums will require a careful removal of any glues and staples used on the card boards. You also have to scratch the photographs carefully before storing them in acid free storage boxes, albums or even placing them on flames. While storing the photos in metal boxes or cardboard boxes, ensure that the boxes are actually labeled acid free.

Old photos labeling.

During old photo storage, you will need to label the photos appropriately for identification purposes. Labeling should be done gently at the back using a permanent marker. To avoid interfering with the actual picture, labeling should precisely be done at the back and not at the front. Labeling should include various and vital details that aid in memory such as the date when the photo was taken and the age of the photo. Also the place where the photo was taken should be included and if possible, the name of photographer if it's really important. Avoid using markers with high pressure such as pens as they may damage the photo.

Storing large quantities of old photographs.

When storing individual photos, you can place them individually in plastic sleeves. Most of photo supply shops will definitely have such sleeves at great offers. Photo storage in plastic sandwich bags is always preferable. Storing large quantities of old photos may actually cost you more thus storing them in inexpensive plastic bags can be a better alternative. If possible, layering them between sheets of papers in the storage boxes is better. Shopping for large photo archive boxes to accommodate the large quantity is always a great idea.

Old photos framing.

Framing of old photos is very important to ensure they last long. Framing of old photographs should always be done using acid free mats. This is of great importance in ensuring that photos don't touch the glass. To avoid deterioration of the photo especially the image, always use acid free black boards during framing. For professional old photo framing, acid free materials should always be used with no compromise. Although they are more expensive, the photos are actually worth them. When framing precious photos, duplicating the old photo is important just in case the original photo fades.
