Who Should Consider Living In An Assisted Living Facility?

The residents of an assisted living facility do not totally depend on having medical care and/or attention. Rather than being homes that are designed for people who need 24/7 attention, assisted living facilities are homes that are built for senior citizens who could use a bit of help with their day-to-day activities. These activities could include dressing, bathing and taking medications.

Seniors who reside in an assisted living facility are still able to live independently. The residents live in their own apartments or rooms. But because they receive the specific help that each of them needs with daily living their families will not have to be worried about any care giving problems. The residents receive the assistance and attention that they require from trained caregivers who work at the facility.

The caregivers at these homes are on call 24 hours per day and the resident supervisors are also available throughout the day. Some facilities offer personalized services for their residents, such as bringing their meals to their apartments.

Assisted living facilities range in size from small ones that house just a few residents to large ones that have hundreds of residents. While some residents live in their own apartments, others may share their rooms with someone else.

Many of these residences have common rooms where the residents can go to participate in various activities.

If you are trying to choose the most appropriate assisted living facility for someone you love you will consider a lot of different issues to determine which residence will best suit their needs. You should consider the living conditions themselves, the types of services that are provided, the number of caregivers that are on call, how many meals per day are provided, and the cost.

When considering the cost you should find out if there is any registration fee and how much it is as well as what the monthly fees are. Also find out if there are any extra charges for medical care, food or other services.

Some facilities charge for personal hygiene items such as toothpaste and soap as well as for medication. Although most of these homes will inform you about any extra charges it is a good idea to know about them in advance. Generally, the less help that a resident needs the less it costs to live there.

And, of course, you should determine if there has been any history of nursing home abuse in the facilities that you are considering.
