Preparing A Skid Steer Loader For WInter

Is there a way for skid steer operators to stay warm and dry during the long winter months? Do skid loader operators want to be out in the harsh winter weather?

As the days keep getting colder, some people feel like it is time to hibernate. But the winter months are no time to shut down a skid steer loader operation. There are paying customers out there and a skid steer owner only needs a few things to make the season safer, more bearable and more comfortable, and handling snow removal for the winter.

CAB ENCLOSURE
The skid steer cab enclosure is an all-weather enclosure with a durable top that fits right over the existing steel cab. Even in the foulest of weather conditions, keeps a skid loader driver out of the elements. It has pliable side panels and a hard front hatch, foot flap, and large windows all the way round, so the driver will not be surprised by cold mornings with frozen controls and ice on the seat. It is vital to make sure the enclosure is secure and leak-free.

CAB HEATER
The only way that one can improve on the cab enclosure unit is with a cab heater. The high-efficiency, seven-inch cube will fit in every conceivable model of skid steer and uses the machine's existing cooling system to provide heat for the driver. Though the installation is a quite lengthy process that requires knowledge of skid loader systems and tools, the result is well worth the effort. Make sure the heater's hoses are not worn or cracked and it will be ready to go this winter.

CHAINS
Before charging out into the drifts, a driver should make sure there are reliable chains or studs to put on the skid loader in a hurry if it is necessary. Tough construction and landscaping equipment, including the skid steer, for as gnarly as one might think their machine is, can frequently find itself in need of some enhanced gripping power. Snow chains have been around for many years and come in different designs and configurations. The chain links themselves do double-duty, holding the mechanism to each wheel, as well as providing external grip on the icy road surface. As well, screw-in, steel tire studs are specially designed for heavy duty equipment use. These are not like screws that some people have fashioned on their own. Rather, the stud system can be used with rubber skid steer tracks as well as traditional tires. Chains will get a skid steer where it needs to go, but track and tire studs will keep digging in season after season.

FLUIDS
Just as with a car, all the fluids in the skid steer machine will need to be checked on before it gets too cold outside. The owner's manual will give the specs for the machine, but be prepared to use lighter-weight oil in the motor.

The hydraulic oils in the skid steer machine should not be overlooked, either. Hydraulics take a beating throughout the year, and cold, dry weather can increase the likelihood of cracked seals, higher viscosity and leaks. Again, check the skid steer owner's manual, and be prepared to change any of the various hydraulic filters as a precautionary safety measure.

And remember that most engine coolants double as anti-freeze fluid as well, so it is crucial that a skid loader be topped up with this vital stuff.

As any skid steer loader owner gets ready for winter, it is always crucial to know what they are in for and how to be prepared. And that involves knowing what equipment is needed to do the work, and what equipment is required to remain safe and comfortable in nasty conditions.
