It doesn't matter if you're experienced as an astronomer or if you're just a person looking to develop a new interest, you'll need to learn how the telescopes you're using work. The catadioptric telescope is a very intriguing variety. This type puts together a combination that gives it the ability to correct errors that other kinds of telescopes can't account for necessarily. You need, however, to have a background to gain that solid understanding of the ways that these telescopes function.

The first step to learning about how these telescopes function is to start off simple. Before going on to the telescopes themselves, it is important to gain a grasp on how the optical system works. Systems that are catadioptric put together reflection and refraction. They do this using a combination of lenses and also mirrors which are curved.

Telescopes use this system. However, they are not the only things that do so. Catadioptric systems are most used for systems that need to focus. Besides telescopes, this includes a wide assortment of possibilities, such as searchlights and microscopes. You might even commonly use one if you use a telephoto lens for anything. And they have a longstanding history, as systems for focusing the first lighthouses also utilized them.

Once you understand how the basic system works, you can move on to the telescopes. These telescopes are optical telescopes. In order to form an image, they put together these specially shaped lenses and mirrors.

This gives the telescopes a distinct advantage over similar pieces that employ lenses or mirrors solely. Using the two in tandem, this type gains a greater ability to correct for errors. The result of this is that they have a field of view that is free of aberration in a bigger area.

These telescopes are also particularly easy to produce. This is because their optical path is folded, which means that they have less mass than other kinds of telescopes. They also boast surfaces that are completely spherical. Additionally, they have the bonus of being able to have a system of correcting already in place. The reflective or the refractive element of the telescope is able to correct any irregularity that the other one produces.

There are several types of these telescopes that are available. Dialytes were the find kind produced, but there are many commonly used today. For instance, Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes are very popular commercial products that employ this method. You may not realize it, but you have probably had experiences with catadioptric telescopes in your lifetime. If you are an amateur astronomer, you have probably used this kind of telescope yourself! And if you have not, they are a great product to look into for making for your own observations.

A catadioptric telescope may sound like it is complicated, but it is not too difficult to understand. You just need to get a good grasp on how the lenses and mirrors work together. Then you will know why these telescopes are great at accounting for errors--and why they make a good choice for anyone who needs to make some observations.
