Why is Your Baby Crying?

If you're the parent of a newborn child or if you live with one then there has to be no doubt in your mind that babies do cry. One of the ways babies communicate their need for food or for sleep, or for feeling pain or for wanting to be held is by crying.

But what is your baby trying to tell you when he or she cries? It can be rather hard to interpret what they mean.

Here are some of the reasons why your baby is crying.

It is Too Hot or Too Cold for Your Baby

Babies love to be bundled up. They enjoy being kept warm. But they don't like to be too warm.

For the most part, if you want your baby to feel comfortable then you should put one more layer of clothing on your baby than you would be necessary for you to wear in order to feel comfortable.

Remember that babies often will feel chilly when you take his or her clothes off to change a diaper or when you need to clean his or her bottom.

Also, babies are more likely to complain when they are too cold than when they are too warm.

Babies Cry Because They Are Sensitive to Pain

One of the first things that doctors look for when a baby appears to cry for no reason is to see if a hair is tightly wrapped around one of their fingers or their toes. They call this a "hair tourniquet" and it can be quite painful for your child.

Some babies cry because they are very sensitive to things such as scratchy fabrics or tags on their clothing. So make sure that whatever you put on your baby is soft and cuddly.

Your Baby May Need to be Burped

It isn't always necessary to burp your baby but if your baby cries after being fed then a good burp may be all that is needed.

The reason is that when babies suck from a bottle or when they are breastfed they swallow air. Then, if the air is not released, they could feel uncomfortable.

Sensitivity to having air in their stomach varies from one baby to the next. Some don't seem to mind while others seem to need to be burped much more often.

Your Baby is Teething

Teething can be a very painful process. Each new tooth has to push its way through your baby's tender gums.

If you can't figure out why your baby is crying feel his or her gums with your finger. It might surprise you to find the hard nub of your baby's tooth making its way to the surface.

Most babies get their first tooth between four and seven months of age, but it sometimes happens earlier.
